The following are comments about a book written by Wendy Shalit called "A Return To Modesty". These comments are useful for many reasons. To understand what the average American lady goes through and what she feels. How important modesty is in society, and the damage it causes to lose it as a whole. Modesty is very Important in Islam. I hope this survey will help Muslim women, and mean understand the blessings Islam has given them. The following is the result of the path we are taking in the Muslim world.

In this book she exposes the cruel lie told to modern young women --namely that they must be "just like men, have many lovers, lose their virginity, give up modesty, and get over it." Loss of innocence has been made into a virtue by our culture with disasterous results. Anorexia, bulimia, self mutiliation are the results of young girls being made to feel they are worthless sex objects. Radical feminism has been no friend to modern woman. Radical feminism's idea of freedom has led to women's unhappiness in a world where she is not respected and made to feel left out and "weird" if she chooses not to take part in the sex roulette game.

I live in the world Wendy Shalit describes and I can tell you she has hit the nail squarely on the head. In the politics of male/female relationships (or more often, non-relationships) today, women almost always lose, and they lose for precisely the reasons Wendy Shalit outlines, yet we persist in playing this game.

Before you decry Wendy Shalit as some sort of religious freak, ask the young single women you know about their sex lives, about their intimate encounters. Every day, young women all over the U.S. try to play a game they can't win. Yes, there are some women for whom sex is not emotional and who can hook and unhook with various men with ease. But for the VAST majority of young women, this is not the case. And most who claim this is the case are lying. At their core, most young women want commitment, and stability, not the present casual approach to everything. However, when we are told that this is what we are SUPPOSED to want, we will go to any lengths to convince ourselves, often experiencing significant emotional damage in the process. I applaud Wendy Shalit for taking such a bold step in writing this book, in saying what so many of us know deep down inside but are afraid to say.

I wonder if promiscuists realise how they buy into a false dualism which splits body from soul: women who surrender their bodies to uncommitted men surrender also their inner selves (what used to be called the soul). No wonder the feminists are up in arms -- Shalit shows anecdotally how our society is the most misogynist in history as today's men systematically get away with what amounts to consensual rape.

She calls for an understanding and recognition of the beauty of sexual modesty, taking issue with intellectuals who support the "myth...that a culture that respected modesty suppressed female desire." In addition, Ms. Shalit views the sexual revolution as having failed "mostly because it ignored the differences between the sexes - specifically, the importance of female modesty."

Included in the third portion is a parallel drawn between modesty and the erotic, noting studies showing that married women are more orgasmic than single women because they feel safer. Ms. Shalit concludes: "Modesty damps down crudeness, it doesn't dampen down Eros. In fact, it is more likely to enkindle it."

I can't remember how many times in college I watched other women go to a party, get wasted and go to bed with a stranger. I could never figure out what was worse-- that they felt so obliged/compelled/whatever to be sexually active, or that they needed to anesthetize themselves first to go through with it.

I agree with many of Shalit's common-sense and fresh-insight conclusions - that modern pop culture has both furthered the cause of misogyny and totally villified anything that has ever been traditionally feminine; that there is nothing inherently happy or liberated about the sexual provocateur; that modest behavior and dress are a good way to set boundaries for how you want others to treat you and effectively differentiates you as someone who adheres to more old-fashioned behavioral expectations (any woman can tell you how differently you get treated by men, women and children going out in a modest A-line dress vs. going out in a micro mini and tube top). In short, I AGREE with Wendy Shalit's theses.

This book was not only very well-written, but superbly researched and non-biased. What I find truly saddening is the level of myopia and hatred so prevalent in the reviews penned by those who do not subscribe to Ms. Shalit's views. Like Ms. Shalit, I too attended a well-respected private liberal arts college--one with living accommodations, faculty and campus politics that mirror that of Williams(the guest speaker at my commencement was poet and self-described "black feminist lesbian warrior"(her words-not mine)Audre Lord). However, what struck me was that in spite of being on such a "pro-woman, equal rights" campus, I had never seen a group that was, collectively, as miserable as my fellow female classmates. The "hooking-up" that Ms. Shalit describes in her book was dead on target(even down to the very term "hooking-up"). My friends found themselves in the constantly revolving door of our clinic--with a host of various and sundry STDs. Here, they had all of the sexual freedom that they could ever want, and so many of these beautiful, brilliant, and talented women suffered from such a low self-esteem that they found themselves distracted and unable to concentrate on their schoolwork--too depressed to even attend classes. Some even dropped-out of college altogether.

Let me drop a bombshell on some of you self-anointed "enlightened thinkers"--- what the feminists don't want you to know is this: staying celibate until marriage is the ULTIMATE in LIBERATION and POWER, and let me explain why--- if you refrain from sexual activity as a single woman, you are liberated from having to play the ridiculous and manipulative little cat-and-mouse games(don't know what I'm talking about? Pick up an issue of Cosmo or Mademoiselle) that so many women feel compelled to play with men. You are liberated from wasting time during your busy day, analyzing and reanalyzing your last encounter with your current love interest(not knowing if he is with you because of all of your wonderful qualities, or because you're good in bed)-- rather than using that bright mind of yours to leave your mark on this earth in some great and special way. Celibacy is POWER--power over your own destiny, a command over your own body and personal space(as Ms. Shalit points out, so many young women are crying out for such power but are looking for it in terrible and self-destructive ways-- eating disorders and self-mutilation--which I witnessed in many of my colleagues), and the power to think more clearly on an intellectual and spiritual(rather than an inappropriately emotional) level. We may have the vote, we may have career opportunities, we may have access to legalized abortion, but women have lost big-time. We have lost the respect of our men-- and that respect was an integral basis of our rules of civilized behavior for CENTURIES. We are paying for the arrogance of a generation whose members thought that they were too smart to respect or gain a greater understanding of the mores and codes of conduct embraced by their parents. Instead, they bastardized them, turned the Western world upside down, and now the women of my generation are paying dearly for it.

I, too, took the road less traveled (of pre-marital abstinence), so as a single woman I also was made to feel like a pariah at times. I wish to encourage young women to hold true to their personal convictions--in making the decision to abstain from pre-marital sex, you fly in the face of "modern-day convention," but trust your instincts. As a happy, successful and fulfilled 31 year-old married woman who has "walked the walk and talked the talk," I can tell you that once I made the conscious choice to abstain, I never looked back(and have NEVER regretted it). For those of you who so nastily and angrily attack Ms. Shalit's book--- why are you so hostile and completely opposed to granting her discussion any credibility? Perhaps the truth of her words hits home a bit too hard, forcing you to rethink the notion that the late 20th century radical feminist movement has done women greater harm than good.....

A Return to Modesty takes a close look at human nature and uncovers what most of us have taken for granted for so long, to the point that we have essentially forgotten what it is we take for granted - that the essential principles of virtue, among which modesty figures highly in this analysis, are there, deep down inside us. These essential values - the prerequisites for the development of virtue - are able to be overlooked, but never quelled. To overlook them is to deny the very essence of what makes us human - a view that stands in refreshing contrast to Nietzche's statement that morals are only the convenient by-product of evolution.

Shalit is able to do what Greer could not: break the male stereotype Philosopher King. She is a Philosopher Queen! Rarely has a writer so intellectually stimulated me: she has already broken one stereotype. My respect for women is higher than ever.

Beyond that, reading this book, you can miss the forest from the trees. Despite its advances on various fronts, the great failure of the feminist movement was teaching women what to think, as in the books of Greer, and other self-proclaimed "feminist" authors.

Shalit goes further: she teaches you how to think. That makes her the best feminist in the country. That is true liberation. The fact that her writing is not poisoned by bitterness, so typical in feminism, makes this writer a breath of fresh air and fresh ideas.

The other huge difference between Shalit and the other feminist writers is they demand respect, but do not get it. Shalit does not demand respect. She does not have to but she gets it anyway. When you write a strong message with a brilliant mind and a good spirit, how easy it is to be taken seriously.

You are alone in life at the end of the day. You will die alone. We are all orphans on the day of judgement. You are in in the middle of the jungle all alone. You have no cloths against the weather, no protection against the wild animals. You are trying to live day by day, You may not realize it but you have become immune to the harshness of life. You may use entertainments of different sorts to live day by day. This entertainment works like anesthesia, so in the jungle as you get hurt, the anesthesia keeps you from feeling the pain. Your reality is blurred. You live on instinct. You are lost in the jungle, and you have been looking for a way out. In fact, You have become obsessed with the way out. Your feelings of success are like a mi'raj that when you finally work so hard to reach to the happiness that is at the end of jungle, there is nothing, there is no end to the misery of this jungle life. In the day time it is so hot, and at night it is so cold. You are sometimes not even aware of your different body parts it feels so numb. There are wild animals all around you. From time to time you see the bones of those gone before you. From time to time you see those who are also looking for a way out, but you see their bones broken or severe bleeding, and the shock of the jungle life has made them immune to it all. They just carry on day to day. You live between the fantasies of success in finding your way out of the jungle one day and and the broken heartedness of the reality that you are stuck with no chance of real permanent happiness. Someone comes along gives you news. This messenger says that this jungle is your life, you can not escape it, you can trod on a safer path till the end of the jungle. People react in different ways to this news. Some are just in denial and will continue on their different paths. Some will mock the messenger who gave them such horrible news. Some will also listen to what the messenger has to say. Those who listen to him, he gives them a tool box they can use to live and a GPS system that will guide them in the right direction. The tool box has weapons in it for protection against the wild animals,it has a tent in it for the night, clothes in it for warmth, and some medicine for when you get sick. He also gives you a walkie Talkie for wireless support for any questions you may have. The walkie talkie is the Dua (prayer) to Allah. The GPS system & medicine is the holy Quran. Salah is the tent that you establish and put up on every stop. The warm cloths are the sunnah of the Prophet. The weapons are the zikr of Allah (remembrance).

In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Verily God has purchased from the believers their persons and their property that Paradise might be theirs. If you wish to understand how profitable a trade it is, and how honourable a rank, to sell one's person and property to God, to be His slave and His soldier, then listen to the following comparison. Once a king entrusted each of two of his subjects with an estate, including all necessary workshops, machinery, horses, weapons and so forth. But since it was a tempestuous and war-ridden age, nothing enjoyed stability; it was destined either to disappear or to change. The king in his infinite mercy sent a most noble lieutenant to the two men and by means of a compassionate decree conveyed the following to them: "Sell me the property you now hold in trust, so that I may keep it for you. Let it not be destroyed for no purpose. After the wars are over, I will return it to you in a better condition than before. I will regard the trust as your property, and pay you a high price for it. As for the machinery and the tools in the workshop, they will be used in my name and at my workbench. But the price and the fee for their use shall be increased a thousandfold. You will receive all the profit that accrues. You are indigent and resourceless, and unable to provide the cost of these great tasks. So let me assume the provision of all expenses and equipment, and give you all the income and the profit. You shall keep it until the time of demobilization. So see the five ways in which you shall profit! Now if you do not sell me the property, you can see that no one is able to preserve what he possesses, and you too will lose what you now hold. It will go for nothing, and you will lose the high price I offer. The delicate and precious tools and scales, the precious metals waiting to be used, will also lose all value. You will have the trouble and concern of administering and preserving, but at the same time be punished for betraying your trust. So see the five ways in which you may lose! Moreover, if you sell the property to me, you become my soldier and act in my name. Instead of a common prisoner or irregular soldier, you will be the free lieutenant of an exalted monarch." After they had listened to this gracious decree, the more intelligent of the two men said: "By all means, I am proud and happy to sell. I offer thanks a thousandfold." But the other was arrogant, selfish and dissipated; his soul had become as proud as the Pharaoh. As if he was to stay eternally on that estate, he ignored the earthquakes and tumults of this world. He said: "No! Who is the king? I won't sell my property, nor spoil my enjoyment." After a short time, the first man reached so high a rank that everyone envied his state. He received the favour of the king, and lived happily in the king's own palace. The other by contrast fell into such a state that everyone pitied him, but also said he deserved it. For as a result of his error, his happiness and property departed, and he suffered punishment and torment. O soul full of desires and lusts! Look at the face of truth through the telescope of this parable. As for the king, he is the Monarch of Pre-Eternity and Post-Eternity, your Sustainer and Creator. The estates, machinery, tools and scales are your possessions while in life's fold; your body, spirit and heart within those possessions, and your outward and inward senses such as the eye and the tongue, intelligence and imagination. As for the most noble lieutenant, it is the Noble Messenger of God; and the most wise decree is the Wise Qur'an, which describes the trade we are discussing in this verse: Verily God has purchased from the believers their persons and property that Paradise might be theirs. The surging field of battle is the tempestuous surface of the world, which ceaselessly changes, dissolves and reforms and causes every man to think: "Since everything will leave our hands, will perish and be lost, is there no way in which we can transform it into something eternal and preserve it?" While engaged in these thoughts, he suddenly hears the heavenly voice of the Qur'an saying: "Indeed there is, a beautiful and easy way which contains five profits within itself." What is that way? To sell the trust received back to its true owner. Such a sale yields profit fivefold. The First Profit: Transient property becomes everlasting. For this waning life, when given to the Eternal and Self-Subsistent Lord of Glory and spent for His sake, will be transmuted into eternity. It will yield eternal fruits. The moments of one's life will apparently vanish and rot like kernels and seeds. But then the flowers of blessedness and auspiciousness will open and bloom in the realm of eternity, and each will also present a luminous and reassuring aspect in the Intermediate Realm. The Second Profit: The high price of Paradise is given in exchange. The Third Profit: The value of each limb and each sense is increased a thousandfold. The intelligence is, for example, like a tool. If you do not sell it to God Almighty, but rather employ it for the sake of the soul, it will become an ill-omened, noxious and debilitating tool that will burden your weak person with all the sad sorrows of the past and the terrifying fears of the future; it will descend to the rank of an inauspicious and destructive tool. It is for this reason that a sinful man will frequently resort to drunkenness or frivolous pleasure in order to escape the vexations and injuries of his intelligence. But if you sell your intelligence to its True Owner and employ it on His behalf, then the intelligence will become like the key to a talisman, unlocking the infinite treasures of Compassion and the vaults of wisdom that creation contains. To take another example, the eye is one of the senses, a window through which the spirit looks out on this world. If you do not sell it to God Almighty, but rather employ it on behalf of the soul, by gazing upon a handful of transient, impermanent beauties and scenes, it will sink to the level of being a pander to lust and the concupiscent soul. But if you sell the eye to your All-Seeing Maker, and employ it on His behalf and within limits traced out by Him, then your eye will rise to the rank of a reader of the Great Book of Being, a witness to the miracles of Dominical art, a blessed bee sucking on the blossoms of Mercy in the garden of this globe. Yet another example is that of the tongue and the sense of taste. If you do not sell it to your Wise Creator, but employ it instead on behalf of the soul and for the sake of the stomach, it sinks and declines to the level of a gatekeeper at the stable of the stomach, a watchman at its factory. But if you sell it to the Generous Provider, the the sense of taste contained in the tongue will raise to the rank of a skilled overseer at the treasuries of Divine compassion, a grateful inspector in the kitchens of God's eternal power. So look well, O intelligence! See the difference between a tool of destruction and the key to all being! And look carefully, O eye! See the difference between an abominable pander and the learned overseer of the Divine library! And taste well, O tongue! See the difference between a stable doorkeeper or a factory watchman and the superintendent of the treasury of God's mercy! Compare all other tools and limbs to these, and then you will understand that in truth the believer acquires a nature worthy of Paradise and the unbeliever a nature conforming to Hell. The reason for each of them attaining his respective value is that the believer, by virtue of his faith, uses the trust of his Creator on His behalf and within the limits traced out by Him, whereas the unbeliever betrays the trust and employs it for the sake of the concupiscent soul. The Fourth Profit: Man is helpless and exposed to numerous misfortunes. He is indigent, and his needs are numerous. He is weak, and the burden of life is most heavy. If he does not rely on the Omnipotent One of Glory, place his trust in Him and confidently submit to Him, his conscience will always be troubled. Fruitless torments, pains and regrets will suffocate him and intoxicate him, or turn him into a beast. The Fifth Profit: Those who have experienced sapiental knowledge and had unveiled to them the true nature of things, the elect who have witnessed the truth, are all agreed that the exalted reward for all the worship and glorification of God performed by your members and instruments will be given to you at the time of greatest need, in the form of the fruits of Paradise. If you spurn this trade with its fivefold profit, in addition to being deprived of its profit, you will suffer fivefold loss. The First Loss: The property and offspring to which you are so attached, the soul and its desires and lusts that you worship, the youth and life with which you are infatuated, all will vanish and be lost; your hands will be empty. But they will leave behind them sin and pain, fastened on your neck like a yoke. The Second Loss: You will suffer the penalty for betrayal of trust. For you will have wronged your own self by using the most precious tools on the most worthless objects. The Third Loss: By casting down all the precious faculties of man to a level much inferior to the animals, you will have insulted and transgressed against God's wisdom. The Fourth Loss: In your weakness and poverty, you will have placed the heavy burden of life on your weak shoulders, and will constantly groan and lament beneath the blows of transience and separation. The Fifth Loss: You will have clothed in an ugly form, fit to open the gates of Hell in front of you, the fair gifts of the Compassionate One such as the intelligence, the heart, the eye and the tongue, given to you to make preparation for the foundations of everlasting life and eternal happiness in the hereafter. Now is it so difficult to sell the trust? Is it so burdensome that many people shun the transaction? By no means! It is not in the least burdensome. For the limits of the permissible are broad, and are quite adequate for man's desire; there is no need to trespass on the forbidden. The duties imposed by God are light and few in number. To be the slave and soldier of God is an indescribably pleasurable honour. One's duty is simply to act and embark on all things in God's name, like a soldier; to take and to give on God's behalf; to move and be still in accordance with His permission and law. If one falls short, then one should seek His forgiveness, say: "O Lord! Forgive our faults, and accept us as Your slaves. Make us sure holders of Your trust until the time comes when it is taken from us. Amen!", and make petition unto Him.

When someone is self centered a certain level of deception takes place. First, no matter how much someone is kind to a self centered egotistic person, the person never feels people have done any good. S/he does not see the sacrifices of others. Such a person over estimates their own contribution to any task. Such a person feels no need to thank anyone. S/he lives in a thankless world where one sees no mercy and kindness of others, and that puts a person in a position where they can not trust anyone but themselves. The Ego works then like a balloon, it blows up in good times, and then some event or issue takes place where the ego of the self centered person pops and deflates. Just as s/he was an overly happy person, now is an overly sad person. As the ego inflates and then deflates in the trials of life s/he becomes more nervous, more anxious, more fearful, more sad and then depressed. When people are egotistic they will in the end up being depressed because an uncontrolled ego is never happy, never satisfied. This is state and direction of the majority of the humans today. Only when the ego is in control can one overcome there anger. Only when the ego is control can one overcome not being a victim of others. Otherwise the ego says, "why me" Instead of, "maybe I am being tested, maybe I did a sin, maybe good will come out of this evil, maybe I being used to as a witness against the wrong doer and I will get my justice in the next life to come" How can one control ones ego in the most proper way? What can the ego submit to that will be fair so that ones ego can be put in control? That is the most merciful Allah.
